Why wool was a natural choice for our new cushion collection

Discover the story behind our wool-filled cushions, handcrafted using wool from our own flock, for sustainable comfort with true traceability.

The story behind our wool-filled cushions

What happens when a homeware designer’s family adopts twelve orphan lambs, falls head over heels for them, and ends up with piles of soft, unused wool? You get a truly traceable, handcrafted cushion collection, rooted in love, sustainability, and a deep connection between product and place.

Giving British wool a new purpose

In 2020, my dad brought home twelve orphan lambs from a neighbouring farm. We raised them by hand, bottle-fed them through spring, and quickly fell in love. Today, they’re fully grown and still very much part of the family, not as livestock, but as much-loved pets with silly names, demands for head rubs and distinct personalities.

But over time, a mountain of soft, squidgy wool began to build up. I didn’t see waste, I saw potential in this magical, natural fibre. And that’s when the idea for The Moonlit Press cushion collection began.

The process: from fleece to cushion filling

As someone who cares deeply about animal welfare, sustainability, and traceability, I wanted to do something meaningful with the wool. I found a small, family-run business to wash and process it using traditional methods that preserve the wool’s natural bounce and texture.

No harsh chemicals. No long supply chains. Just beautifully clean, sustainable wool from happy sheep.

The result is a soft, breathable fibre that’s perfect for cushion filling. And because the wool comes from our own flock, every cushion pad is completely traceable, right back to the field.

Why we only use wool-filled pads for our cushion covers

I’d always wanted to expand our homeware collection to include cushions. But as a vegetarian, I prefer not to use feather pads. And at the heart of The Moonlit Press is a commitment to sustainability, quality, and transparency so synthetic fillings didn’t sit right with me either.

Using the wool from our own flock felt like the perfect solution.

Not only is it natural and renewable, but this homegrown fluff has wonderful qualities you simply don’t get from synthetic alternatives. It’s hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to dust mites and mould for one; making it a kinder choice for allergy sufferers like me.

Why we shear our sheep ourselves

Sheep need to be sheared to stay healthy and comfortable through the warmer months. With a small, much-loved flock, we choose to shear them ourselves.

Unlike conventional farms, our sheep are sheared slowly, often while standing, happily munching hay during their annual haircut. It takes a lot longer, but that extra time ensures their comfort and wellbeing. For me, their welfare is a crucial part of the process, and an extension of our commitment to ethical, thoughtful making.

Why I chose to make our cushion pads by hand

We only have a certain amount of wool each year which, surprisingly, adds up quickly, even from a small flock. But we’re still working in micro-batches, so I make each cushion pads myself. I sew and fill them by hand in our garden studio, creating pads designed to snuggly fit our cotton cushion covers.

It’s a slower, more intentional way of making, but there’s something special about working with a fibre I’ve carried from field to finished cushion.

Why wool is at the heart of our cushions

Our cushion collection uses wool-filled pads because this wonderful, natural material deserved a new life. Wool is at the heart of our cushions because it reflects the way we like to do things: slow, thoughtful, and as natural as possible. Unlike synthetic alternatives, wool is breathable, biodegradable, and renewable making it a softer, kinder choice for both people and planet.

By using wool from our own sheep, raised with care and sheared by hand, we can offer a product that’s completely traceable, reduces waste, and is free from harsh chemicals. Proudly made in small batches, right here in Britain.

Our cushions are more than just decorative. They’re crafted with purpose, filled with natural comfort, and designed to bring joy to your home for years to come.
